About Us
Founded in 1969, Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to preserving open space, protecting natural resources, maintaining accessibility to trails, and providing environmental education. Through grants and the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS has helped to raise over $5 million used for the preservation of more than 1,000 acres of land and the establishment of a network of trails that nearly encircles Princeton. In addition to preservation, FOPOS leads in land stewardship through forest and riparian restoration projects at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. These initiatives support vital ecosystem services such as water filtration, carbon sequestration, and soil stabilization, while enhancing biodiversity and providing critical habitats for wildlife. FOPOS also sponsors community programs, such as nature walks and educational workshops, and advocates for government actions to protect our water, land, wildlife, and plant communities.

Volunteer Information
Typical Volunteer Opportunities:Typical Volunteer Opportunities: FOPOS relies on the help of volunteers to drive our mission forward. Throughout all four seasons, FOPOS offers regular volunteer sessions as well as scheduled group volunteer opportunities for corporate, school, and community organizations. Volunteers work under the guidance of the FOPOS stewardship team to assist with a variety of conservation projects at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. Volunteers can also apply to work with the FOPOS trail building team to improve access to the Mountain Lakes Open Space Area by creating and maintaining hiking trails, boardwalks, and footbridges.
